Description
The Winnebago Via® created the exclusive Mercedes-Benz® Sprinter-based Class A category and revolutionized the definition of what a Class A coach could be with unparalleled fuel economy and eye-catching styling. For 2011, the revolution continues and the Via shines even brighter with a host of improvements, including the all-new double-slide 25Q floorplan and a more powerful Mercedes-Benz diesel engine that provides improved fuel economy.
By the numbers or in appearance, the Via isn't a big coach. Twenty-five feet long and a foot lower and narrower than a typical Class A, it goes many places (including length-limit campgrounds) larger coaches simply can't get in. And it features double slide-outs, a first for the Sprinter chassis.
Although Winnebago typically does its own cabinetry work, the Via uses Technoform parts often seen in European coaches and boats, where weight reduction is key. They're good-looking units and include complete galley, two overhead sets front and rear, and ambient lighting in each area. Even the entry door is different, a double-sealed, angled-jamb unit with a screened window and blackout shade.
What sets the Via apart though is the way it drives. The V-6 Mercedes diesel makes just 95 lb-ft less torque than a Ford 6.8L V-10, and does so much earlier in the rev band. Combined with proper gearing, the Via accelerates on par with many diesel pushers, manages 48 to 58 mph on 7-percent-plus grades, and is easy on fuel.
The 26.4-gallon tank provides an est 450-mile range and generator time for less than $100.
The Via is not an inexpensive coach. A Mercedes Sprinter chassis isn't cheap yet it feels more comfortable than most at this GVWR. Making things light isn't cheap either — ask any Porsche GT3 owner — and the Via comes with everything virtually needed as standard.
